ST. LOUIS, USA – Delegates at the 62nd General Conference Session, currently underway in St. Louis, Missouri, have elected Erton C. Köhler as the new President of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

The historic vote took place on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Köhler, who previously served as the General Conference Executive Secretary since April 2021, steps into the highest leadership role of the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church.

His election marks a significant moment, as he becomes the first South American to hold this prestigious position.

According to the Adventist News Network (ANN), the official news service of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Köhler's leadership has been characterized by a strong focus on mission.

During his tenure as secretary, he championed the "Mission Refocus" initiative, leading the church in identifying and prioritizing areas for global evangelism, including unreached people groups and major urban centers.

Sources like Adventist Today and tedNEWS Network also confirmed the election, highlighting that Köhler received overwhelming support from the delegates present.

He expressed humility and a call for unity, communion with the Lord, identity, and mission for the global church.

Born in Brazil in 1969, Köhler brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various capacities within the church, including local church pastor, youth ministries director, and president of the South American Division.

He holds degrees in theology and pastoral theology, and is pursuing a doctorate from Andrews University.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church, with over 23 million members across more than 200 countries, now looks to President Köhler to continue guiding its spiritual and administrative direction in the coming years.

The Central Philippine Union Conference offered prayers for the new Adventist World leader, asking for God's wisdom to be upon him as he steers the wheel of great responsibility.

Pastor Eliezer “Joer” Barlizo Jr., CPUC president, said in an interview, “My heartfelt congratulations to President Erton Köhler on his election as the new president of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists!”

“As he steps into this vital role, we fervently pray that God's divine wisdom and discerning power will be abundantly poured out upon him, guiding every decision as he leads the SDA Church forward. May His presence illuminate Brother Köhler's path,” he added.
