Over 1,500 residents received free healthcare services during a massive medical mission held at the Panphil Frasco Gymnasium in Liloan, Cebu, on May 10, 2026.
The event, themed “To extend the healing ministry of Christ,” was facilitated by Gonz and Betsy Sumayang. The mission focused on providing specialized surgical and dental care, along with general consultations, to underserved members of the community.
A medical team of 100 professionals, including surgeons from various regions in Mindanao and specialists from SWU Dentistry and Optometry and Adventist Hospital Cebu, volunteered their time for the initiative. The Liloan Local Government Unit (LGU) provided logistical support and coordination for the venue.
Organizers reported that the mission delivered an extensive array of healthcare services, highlighted by more than 500 dental procedures, including cleanings, extractions, and fluoride therapy for both children and adults. Surgical teams successfully completed over 300 circumcisions and 85 cyst excisions, while the vision care department provided eye examinations and reading glasses to 250 patients. Additionally, the medical team conducted 200 consultations with pediatric and adult patients, ensuring a holistic approach to the community’s immediate health needs.
The initiative was primarily sponsored by the Orlando Filipino SDA Church, along with several donors from the United States. Betsy Sumayang noted that the preparation involved significant challenges, particularly in securing high-cost medicines and coordinating medical professionals’ schedules.
“On our part from the USA, we were praying for donors to meet the high cost of supplies,” Sumayang said. “It was very challenging to ask medical people to come and commit their time, but our faith in God’s providence has become rock-solid because He always answers our prayers.”
Local leaders expressed surprise at the scale of the outreach. LGU Coordinator Russell Canete said nothing of this magnitude had ever been conducted in the community before. Liloan Mayor Aljew Frasco, who visited the site, described the atmosphere as “exhilarating” while witnessing the volunteers’ work.
The mission also relied on a large group of local volunteers. One team member noted the unexpected scale of the labor, stating, “The people who cooked our food and the youth who washed our instruments were not expecting this kind of population because they never volunteered before.”
While the sponsors do not have a fixed schedule for future missions, stating they go “wherever God sends,” the impact on Liloan was immediate.
“All missionary endeavors are extra special because we are lifting Jesus up,” Sumayang said. “We might not see the full impact now, but we believe this work draws people together.”
